A few days ago, I did a teleseminar where we talked about things that “didn’t work”.
We talked about some ridiculous “make money online” opportunities including surveys, typing, and writing.
We discussed SEO myths and busted them out. We talked about traffic tactics that normally don’t attract many viable visitors and how to make them work, too.
At the end of the call, I announced my new program SEO and Traffic. Check it out and download the call!
The video podcast below was supposed to be up last Saturday. The audio should have been up this previous Saturday.
You’ll notice the video is a split second different from the audio, they just don’t line up right. I tried 7 times to get it perfect for you, but it just wasn’t happening. The content rocks, so take a listen to it anyways.
As far as Persona based marketing (the audio podcast) here is the example I referred to in the MP3. “Anonymous Adams” is one of my closest friends. He interviews Mega Millionaires and the content is insane. Check it out and pay close attention to the sales letter. It’s one of the best I’ve ever seen.
Today, my friend Andrew Bourland passed on. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.
Please enjoy the 30 minutes of a presentation I did for a recent seminar below:
I have been fighting with myself over what I wanted this blog to be. I haven’t posted here in over 4 months.
I’ve finally made a decision today that this blog will be for podcasts only. Now, my promise to you is that there will be at least one video or audio every week from this point on.
The main topic is marketing and we’ll be exploring as many subtopics as I feel like discussing. If you have things you want to talk about, feel free to place them in the comments below.
There will be at least 2 more videos, if you’d like to get immediate notice when they’re done you can head over to Web 2.0 Cashflow and sign up there (Plus get my best report ever for free).
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the videos below.
I see some crazy, unreal expectations related to some of my friends. The customers think they are gods and immune from the troubles that everybody is facing right now.
That simply isn’t the case.
I have one friend that faces some very major and intense health issues. He is uncomfortable sharing them and doesn’t want sympathy (which I respect), but most see him as a young and very successful marketer and have no idea about the frustrations he faces.
I know of three extremely successful marketers that suffer from insomnia. You wouldn’t know it if you didn’t know them personally, but it causes them a lot of frustration. They make plenty of money, yet they have trouble getting a few hours of sleep.
They aren’t comfortable revealing these things to everyone, so I won’t be the one to do it for them.
That wouldn’t be right.
However, I do have some things to share about myself.
I have made some business decisions over the past year that have cost me roughly $100,000.
I have lost double the average annual income due to bad decisions. And I’ve learned more than $100,000 worth of experience from those horrible decisions.
When my first business imploded it cost us over $25,000 in personal debt. A vendor stole about $5k from us and it spiraled into 5 times that amount due to my decisions. I personally spent weeks on the phone with customers to ensure they got their money returned to them and the debt landed solely on my shoulders. That time was due to my bad decisions and I was happy to part with it to ensure those poor people didn’t lose their money.
My first year online was full of amazing occurrences, I learned so much.
After that business blew up, my wife made me realize that I was capable of doing SEO service for other companies.
That sucked, too.
People are unreasonable and want results in seconds when it should take minutes, minutes when it takes hours, and days when it should take weeks.
I lasted 90 days before I closed that business.
Then, my wife suggested I write a book teaching others how to do what I did.
I had my first book done in less than a week.
In the next 2 years I built my current business to a level anyone would be proud of.
Yet, I still lost 6 figures.
Here are my pieces of advice to ensure you don’t make the mistakes I’ve made.
Follow your gut. If something feels wrong, it is.
Listen to those you love and trust. They only have your best interest at heart.
If you make mistakes, face them head on. Don’t let fear stop you.
Always apologize if you mess up. You’d be amazed what a heartfelt “I’m Sorry” will do.
Transparency is key. Being an open book makes life very easy.
Do the right thing and if you mess up, fix it.
The point of this is not to embarrass myself. I want you to understand that everyone is the same. We are all just people.
Most have not made the mistakes I’ve made, but at the same time, most have not seen the successes I have. It’s been a double edged sword with me.
I have always done my best to do the right thing.
If you can say that, you’ll always be OK.
I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished, especially with all of the hurdles I’ve faced, both professionally and personally. Always keep in mind that anyone you deal with, anywhere, for any reason, is one thing.
The key to marketing anything via social media is to actually be social.
Interact with others.
Build relationships.
Relationships with customers. Relationships with others in your field. Relationships with competitors.
Relationships with people.
By building relationships with your customers, you build trust. You gain insight into your own faults and the holes in your business. You get to see exactly what they need more of from you to feel more comfortable buying from you.
Relationships with others in your field opens up all kinds of doors. It’s much easier to request a joint venture from somebody you know. They might even read your email or return your phone call.
Here is a concept that is usable in industries outside of information based marketing:
There is an idea called “trading traffic” used in adult (porn) marketing. This is based upon the fact that you may not have what a potential customer is looking for and it would be better to hand them off to one of your friends than to lose them to Google or some other website. It’s done by recommending someone that offers something comparable to what you offer, but their products are different. Either a different brand or a different variation on the products you currently sell.
If you don’t have an affiliate program, would it kill you to recommend someone else after someone buys from you? How about a “recommended ______ (insert base keyword here)” that would compliment what you sell.
If you sell Ipods, it would only make sense to recommend that your visitor go to a site that sells Ipod accessories that you don’t carry.
See how this works?
One good relationship could bring you in double your current amount of sales. Based upon a recommendation like this, your conversion should be extremely high.
Relationships with competitors is a slightly more challenging concept.
If someone directly competes with you, it is natural to see them as the enemy. The truth is that you should see yourself as so good that there is no such thing as competition.
I welcome competitors and am happy to work with them. Especially when it comes to information based marketing, it only makes sense to work with your competitors. It leads to new opportunities and products. Combining your expertise can only make you both more money.
So, how do you develop relationships with all of these people?
Here are steps to take to ensure this works as well as possible.
Make yourself as visible as possible by using your company name in your social presence.
Interact with those that attempt to interact with you. Reply to comments on your blogs, your social media profiles, and tweets on twitter.
Be you. If your persona isn’t you, always be that persona. Consistency is key here.
Be attractive. Nobody wants to be with an idiot. If you’re an idiot, hide that from others.
Help people. Provide information nobody else provides.
Treat others as you want to be treated. It’s called “The Golden Rule” for a reason.
If you spent today awake, you got at least one email about Stompernet’s Stomping The Search Engines 2.0 launch. This is normal for a launch from the largest internet marketing training company, but something crazy happened.
The launch hasn’t come to pass.
Now, don’t get me wrong here, I’ve got nothing negative to say about Andy, Brad, Stompernet or any of their employees or staff. In fact, I want to praise them for effort worthy of applause. They did the best they could and took it on the chin when it didn’t go as planned.
That isn’t easy. They could have waited it out and just said, “Here it’s ready now”. Instead, Andy recorded an apology and put it on the main page.
Instead of giving more of my thoughts, I did a Twitter search for “Stompernet” and found some interesting comments. I’m going to approach those directly.
“Stompernet is delayed a day, I’m sure Joel Comm’s book is the reason”.
Seriously, there is no internet marketing conspiracy. Nobody sat in a room and planned out a delay to get people talking. Gurus don’t sit and plan on how to artificially create scarcity or get more of you to buy their products. Most already want their products.
I mean REALLY… You would think that the stompernet guys would KNOW that a million people would slam their site… Maybe 5million came!!!
You’d think after a half dozen successful launches, the guys at Stompernet would be ready for everything, right? Well, to a certain point, you are right.
However, let’s take a different look. Normally, when the big guys launch something it’s at least a few hundred dollars. What happens with a launch like that is some people come to simply see what’s going on without any interest in buying the product. It’s like a car crash that everybody slows down to watch. Then, of course, there are those that are interested in the product who go to the page and find the buy button as quickly as possible.
Never before has there been such a buzz and mass promotion of a free product. I don’t think anyone could have been reasonably prepared for something like this. I know for a fact that the Stomper boys have been working on this launch for weeks and testing the systems like crazy.
They did their best and it simply wasn’t enough.
Ah those crafty Stompernet Guys again – they have a sudden server issue and needed to collect my email addy – hmmm- anyone else on the list?
This one really pisses me off. It is directly stated on the page that this is not a list that is being built for marketing, but as a courtesy. Those that sign up for that list will simply be alerted when it goes live. Take some time to actually look at what is on the page before assuming someone is looking to spam you.
Honestly, their list is going to be filled with buyers as of tomorrow when this launch happens.
Here is what we should learn from this fiasco.
#1 You can never be too prepared.
#2 Even the best intentions can lead to a negative situation.
#3 Transparency can only lead to good things.
#4 Standing up and saying “I’m sorry” is very powerful after messing up.
#5 Always providing value makes all naysayers look dumb.
If anything like this ever happens to you, follow the 5 steps above to deflate the negativity.
The launch has been pushed back to 2 pm Thursday, Eastern time.
There is something amazing that happened as a result of this. I saw some amazing people come out of the darkness to support Stompernet with comments like these:
I certainly dont envy the StomperNet team today. Maybe next week, but not today.
Waiting for Andy. Can you imagine how he feels, 2, 4, 6 now 7pm Stompernet 2 taking more time than they thought. Cant wait.
Waiting for Stompernet 2.0 to go live. It’s late! Who cares I get it free for subscribing to a $39 per month course. A no brainer!
That is exactly what I like to see. People like that are the ones I want to be my customers and Stompernet has earned their attention.
The reason I’m reviewing these both at once is that they are a package.
That’s right, they come together.
I’m not allowed to reveal the exact reasons why that is, so if you’d like to be one of the first to know why, sign up for my newsletter by filling out the form to the right.
Stomping The Search Engines 2.0 is the most comprehensive SEO course I’ve ever seen.
It is given by Andy Jenkins, Brad Fallon, Dan Thies, Jerry West, and Leslie Rohde.
I checked 3 of the 7 modules.
The first was Module 1 by Andy Jenkins. The other 2 Modules were done by Dan Thies and Jerry West.
I also checked out one of the Modules Brad Fallon did.
Now, I may be a touch biased as I spent time with all four of these guys a few weeks ago at Stompernet Live 6, but the content here was clearer than nearly any SEO product I’ve ever seen.
My favorite was the link building section, but I’m sure you’ll pick your own favorites when you grab it.
I say “when you grab it” because I know that this offer is going to be so alluring that nearly everyone is going to sign up for it. Stomping The Search Engines 2.0 has a value of $497, but won’t cost near that much.
The Net Effect is Stompernet’s new journal. It has articles from David Bullock, Jerry West, Dan Thies, Andy Jenkins, Andy Edmonds, Sherman Hu, Brad Fallon, Dave Taylor, Dan Thies and even more of the faculty.
I am so impressed with this. The content is stellar, but what floored me was the last page.
The last page is designed to give you an action plan to actually apply what is inside The Net Effect.
I’ve been taking strides to ensure that people that buy from me are able to use my products, but this is the first time I’ve seen others use tactics similar to my own. Bravo to Stompernet for taking the steps necessary to see that their customers actually get results from their products.
